Celebrating National Library Week--By opening the new Robidoux Library

Welcome to our new web page. I hope you like it—we’ve been working on it for months and have added lots of new features including this blog by some staff who want to share interesting stuff they are working on. I hope you sign up for an account and add your comments to ours.

This week is National Library Week (April 11-17) and what better way to celebrate than to open a new library. This Saturday, the beautiful new state-of-the-art Louis Robidoux Library will open at the corner of Mission and Riverview in Rubidoux. This beautiful new library will offer many new features, including 22,000 new books, a literacy center, a 28-seat computer lab, 36 additional computers for public internet use, new study rooms, and a huge meeting room that will be a center of community programming and activity.

We originally designed this Robidoux Library in 2002 to compete for public library construction funds from the State Library. We applied for funds three times, but were not successful (only about one in ten projects were funded). But through the leadership of County Supervisor John Tavaglione, funds were identified to build the building. Continuing to build libraries in this era of economic distress—and in economically challenged areas such as Robidoux—sends a powerful message about the potential of libraries to contribute to the economic development of our communities. Thousands of new and returning library customers will find in the new library a wealth of print and digital resources and library programs to help them grow, prosper and empower themselves and their families. Others will simply find a good book to read, go online, or find a good movie to watch.

We look forward to seeing you this Saturday, April 17, at the grand opening the new Robidoux Library. Happy National Library Week!
