War Movies With a Message

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that some of the strongest anti-war statements made are in war films?
The most recent, and acclaimed, film of this nature is “The Hurt Locker” directed by Kathryn Bigelow. We follow an Army bomb disposal squad in Iraq; SSgt James has just joined the company. He is a renegade, enjoying the thrill he gets when disarming bombs, regardless of the safety of other company members. Sgt. Sanborn, another company member, is by the book, carrying out his orders and trusting his fellow soldiers to do so as well. Spec. Eldridge admires both men, but isn’t sure which of their ways is best.
Adding to an already stressful situation is the fact that any person at any bomb site could be a bomber, perhaps waiting to view the results of their work……  An excellent character study of three men at war and the internal and external struggles they must deal with every day.
There are several other very well made war films that carry strong anti-war sentiments. Some examples are “Redacted” (2007) directed by Brian De Palma, “Das Boot” (1981) directed by Wolfgang Peterson, “Platoon” (1986) directed by Oliver Stone and “Full Metal Jacket” (1987) directed by Stanley Kubrick.
