Word of Mouth
After a few weeks of adjusting to a new lifestyle and a new world, I have come to the conclusion that this is the best place to be, is where all good books come to pass. I have not only been given the privilege of perusing young adult books before they are put on the shelf, but I must size and talk them up to the teens I come in contact with. So as I sit at my cluttered desk of new books to add, folders to shift though and a dozen calendars with time tables that must be met, my eyes catch sight of four books that were presented to me with eager anticipation.
First book I opened is Nic Sheff’s “Tweak”. It’s the writer’s memoir about his experiences using methamphetamine presented in a popular non-fiction way. Someone not too long ago had requested it, and needless to say, I became curious. Now I have looked though it, having read a few chapters (it helps now not having any school classes to cram for instead!!), and have an amazingly warm admiration for someone who’s gone through such experiences.
The next book that caught my eye was “Looking for Alaska” by John Green. (Prejudging, I had already assumed it would be about traveling. Silly me!). I didn’t take into consideration the smoke on the cover – or that it rose from a candle that had apparently been snuffed out. Instead, I jumped through a few pages, suddenly riveted not by a tale of travels, but of a loss, before and its aftermath. Like the author, I love the play with words, the harsh realities of going through the “labyrinth of life, love, and the mysteries of being human”. I believe I will add this to my "Must Read" list.
My family and I went for Green Bay Packers. My son is a HUGE fan – even though we didn’t come from Wisconsin! The Super Bowl has come and gone, and naturally, the next book I picked up was Mike Lupica’s “Million Dollar Throw”. Nate has to make that "once-in-a-lifetime" throw for a million dollars. Does it he do it? Can he do it?? Only one way to find out…
And finally, I am reading – and cannot seem to put down – the “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins. This wasn’t a book that was giving to me to pursue intentionally, it was given to me by my daughter on her Nook. After hearing about it so much from my fellow coworkers I had to read it for myself. Now, I sit here with a fresh batch of YA books, saddened that I have to go through them before I finish “The Hunger Games”. I will just have to wait to see if Katniss survives (NOO DON’T TELL ME!!) and will just have hope that all will be well for District 12.
Oh dear me! The life of a reader!
Until next time,
~Miss Sue
